AI visibility for independent hotels: the one asset an OTA cannot rent from you
A chain can buy recall. An independent cannot, and it does not need to. What decides whether an assistant names you is a website an assistant can read, and that is the one thing you own outright.
AI sessions measured across the sites we track, last 30 days.
Quick answer
An independent hotel is visible in AI when an assistant names it while answering a question that never contained its name. Two things make that problem different for an independent. Nobody searches your brand, so brand pages will not save you. And the intermediary already advertises with your category and your kind of name inside the assistant: in a sweep on 3 September 2026 we found Booking.com ads placed inside ChatGPT answers carrying hotel names in the ad title, while 0 of the 5 Spanish chains we checked, Meliá, RIU, Barceló, Iberostar and Palladium, had a single ad of their own in the same answers.
Why an independent buys something different from a chain
A chain arrives at the assistant with decades of brand pages, press coverage and directory entries feeding the model. Its problem is control. An independent arrives with one website, and its problem is presence: nothing in the model points at it, so the answer is built out of aggregators, blogs and the OTA.
That flips the priority order. For a chain, the first job is fixing what assistants already say. For an independent, the first job is being readable at all, which is a small, cheap and specific list of changes on one website. Our AI readiness score exists because that list is short enough to finish.
Your analytics is probably showing you a fifth of your ChatGPT traffic
Across the websites we measure, AI assistants were about 3.7% of all sessions in the last 30 days. Of those, around nine of every ten came from ChatGPT, then Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. The panel at the top of this page carries the live counts, read from the same database.
Now the part that matters for a small property. Fewer than one in five ChatGPT sessions arrived with a referrer. The rest carried no referrer at all, just a campaign tag. A tool that classifies AI traffic by referrer alone shows you that fifth and hides more than 80% of the channel, and on a site with modest volume that is the difference between a visible trend and a flat line you conclude is nothing. reporte.ai counts both signals and deduplicates the session, which is why the number on the page is bigger than the one in a generic analytics tool.
What an independent gets, in order
First the pixel, so AI visits stop being filed as direct traffic and you can see which pages assistants send people to. Then the readiness fixes, because there is no point measuring citations of a page a crawler cannot parse. Then the questions: the real ones travellers ask about your destination, measured on 5 surfaces, so you know where you are absent. Then a content plan where every entry carries the number that justifies it, and drafts you edit and publish yourself on your own site.
None of this asks you to hand over your website. reporte.ai never publishes to it.
The honest part: the measurement has to be finished
Of the 100 websites in the platform on 4 September 2026, 7 had never recorded a single session, because the script was never installed. Not one of them is a measurement problem. They are an unfinished setup, and until the pixel is live the panel has nothing true to say about that property.
So the first milestone is not a report. It is a real visit landing in the database with your domain on it. It takes one script and it is the only part we cannot do without you.
No. In our measurement pass of 3 and 4 September 2026 the site found in the answer most often was a small independent one, cited as a source on 5 of the 5 surfaces we measure, and even so its name was written into the answer text on only 2 of them.
It is small and it is measurable. Across the websites we measure it was about 3.7% of all sessions in the last 30 days, and around nine of every ten of those came from ChatGPT. The live counts are in the panel at the top of this page.
Because most of it does not arrive with a referrer. Fewer than one in five ChatGPT sessions in the last 30 days carried one, so a tool that classifies by referrer alone shows you under a fifth of the real number.
It advertises with hotel names in the ad title. In a sweep on 3 September 2026 we found those ads, and none of the 5 Spanish chains we checked had a single ad of their own in the same answers.
The pixel on your website. Of the 100 websites in the platform on 4 September 2026, 7 had never recorded a single session because the script was never installed.
Yes. The pixel is 1 script on your website and it runs alongside GA4 without conflict. Adding it to the booking engine as well is what connects an AI visit to the booking step.
Long enough that you need a baseline first. Measure for at least 30 days before you change anything, because the assistant answer itself moves between passes taken 1 day apart.
